The CryptoPunks is one of the earliest examples of a "Non-Fungible Token" on Ethereum. This NFT project was started by Larva Labs in 2017 when the team created 10,000 unique Punks that could be acquired for free by anyone with an ETH wallet. They were quickly claimed and ever since then the NFTs have been traded on open marketplaces.
CryptoPunks are 24x24 pixel art images portraying unique characters. Those with a blue background are not for sale and have no current bids. A red background Punk is available for sale by their owner and purple background Punks have an active bid on them.
Due to their rarity, exclusivity, and history, CryptoPunks sell for higher prices on marketplaces and have been sold through auction houses like Christie's. On March 11, 2022 it was announced that all of the CryptoPunks IP was acquired by Yuga Labs (parent company and creators of the Bored Ape Yacht Club project) for an undisclosed amount. Yuga Labs said right away that they were giving full commercial rights to CryptoPunks owners.
